The converter station converts DC power into AC power for Long Island and is located on a 12-acre parcel of land on Duffy Avenue in an industrial/commercial area adjacent to the Wantagh State Parkway. The site is shared by a New York State Department of Transportation maintenance facility. Neptune RTS acquired the necessary property rights to the Duffy Avenue land, which is owned by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP). The Company executed a Master Agreement with OPRHP that encompasses both the use of the Wantagh State Parkway right-of-way for installing the land portion of the cables as well as the Duffy Avenue parcel for the converter station.
The Duffy Avenue Converter Station is comprised of three main, connected buildings, the tallest of which is about 64 feet high (similar to a 5-6 story building), and filter banks (similar to a standard electrical substation) with lightning protection masts up to 78 feet high. The station site plan includes planted trees and shrubbery to reduce visibility and fenced for security and noise minimization.
