Neptune Project Status

Project construction commenced in the fall of 2005 and commenced operation in the summer of 2007, ahead of schedule and within budget.  Principal components of the Neptune Project are the two converter stations at Duffy Avenue, Long Island and in Sayreville, New Jersey; installation of the cable along the Wantagh Parkway on Long Island; and installation of the undersea portion of the cable for approximately 50 miles between Sayreville and Jones Beach.  Click on the “Downloads” tabs to see construction photographs.

Converter Stations

Construction of the converter station facilities began in October 2005. Installation of major equipment finished in early 2007.  Cable connection, testing, and commissioning commenced and finished in Spring 2007. 

Upland Cable Installation

The Long Island upland cable installation activities along the Wantagh Parkway began in October 2005 and finished in Winter 2007, including connection of the cable from the ocean to the land. Landscape restoration along the Wantagh Parkway commenced and finished in Spring 2007.

Marine Installation

The first undersea cable installation campaign in New Jersey waters, traversing 25 submarine miles through Ambrose Channel, Raritan Bay, and the Raritan River, to the Sayreville, New Jersey Converter Station landfall, began in early September, 2006 and finished in November, 2006.  The second undersea installation campaign in New York waters, traversing 26 miles from the New Jersey/New York ocean border proceeding east to Jones Beach, commenced in November 2006 and finished in Winter 2007.
